"Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness"

Joseph Pilates

Classical Pilates History

What is Pilates?

Joseph Pilates was born in 1883 in Germany. As a child he suffered from many ailments including asthma and rickets then became interested in boxing and gymnastics and concluded that poor posture and insufficient breathing led to worse health. He then began developing his movement system which he called 'Contrology' focusing on breathing, spinal movements, and improving posture. He immigrated to New York City around 1925 and opened the first Pilates studio in New York City in 1926 with his wife Clara. After Joe’s death in 1967 Clara continued to operate what was known as The Pilates Studio on Eighth Avenue in New York until his disciple, Romana Kryzanowska, became the director around 1970.

Those who trained under Joseph Pilates are known today as 'the elders' and their knowledge and expertise continues to be passed onto new instructors today.  Classical pilates focuses on six principles originally described by Joe including: breath, concentration, control, precision, center, and flow to improve overall strength, stamina, flexibility, and stability.

At Ground Up Studio, we offer classically focused pilates through private and semi-private lessons. Whether you are new to pilates or looking to deepen your pilates connections, Ground Up Studio can help you on your journey.
